Section 14--Live Video Tapes

****************************************************************************

Note: I do not actually have copies of all the tapes listed. Most are in circulation among traders, but many, at the request of the artists, are not. I am no longer actively involved in tape-trading.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Hüsker Dü Format: Audience film Medium: Beta(?) videotape Date Recorded: 11 Sep 1980 Location: 7th St Entry, Minneapolis Recording Quality: B Time: 30:38 Videographer: David Shearer. Monochrome footage shot from back of club. Fair amount of jumpiness, exacerbated by zoom, but plenty of good, solid segments. Image is a bit blurry, likely resulting from tape deterioration. Contents: All Tensed Up Strange Week Don't Try To Call I'm Not Interested Don't Try It Sore Eyes Push The Button Walk With The Wounded Gilligan's Island Tired Of Doing Things Do The Bee Uncle Ron MTC Drug Party [fragment] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Hüsker Dü Format: Audience recording Medium: DVD (converted from super 8) Date Recorded: 1980 Location: 7th St Entry, Minneapolis Recording Quality: B Time: 8:53 Notes: Shot from fairly close, on Bob's side of the stage, under poor lighting conditions. Some jumpy edits. Bob switches from the Flying Vee to a Strat (or Mosrite?) on "Gravity." Footage shot by Joel Shepard. Exact date unknown. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Hüsker Dü Format: Pro-shot tape Medium: VHS cassette Date Recorded: 05 Sep 1981 Location: 7th St Entry, Minneapolis Recording Quality: B+/C (serious tracking problems during "Free Land," "Wheels" and half of "Call On Me" at beginning of the second set.) Time: 60 min Notes: Multi-camera concert video shot with eventual public release apparently in mind. Part of five successive nights of shooting. Other bands (e.g., Replacements) were videotaped during these sessions as well. The tapes are rumored to reside in the Twin/Tone vaults. Bob Mould comments: "The recordings from 1981 were to be released as a multi-lp/video package tentatively entitled 'Soundcheck.' Twin/Tone probably has the tapes somewhere; I would suspect it's their final 'ace-in-the-hole', for when they next run out of money, or need another M&D deal. Everyone from that period (Mats, Loud Fast Rules, Hüsker, etc.) were part of it, so it'll be a big item at some point." The provenance of this particular copy is a mystery. Long uncirculated, this recording leaked out in the early 90s and is now fairly common. Decent lighting, but some color noise and interference bars. Found in a basement in Seattle. Contents: [Same as audio tape above] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Hüsker Dü Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS cassette Date Recorded: 16 Dec 1983 Location: Love Hall, Philadelphia PA Recording Quality: B+ Time: 52:11 Notes: Single-camera, fixed-position, probably mounted on a wall and operated by the club. It took 25 years for this video to come to light. Great performance and an excellent document of the Hüskers in their prime. According to Facebook poster Lenny Crunch, this version is his first-generation copy of a video recording shot by Jeff Jenkins of WKDU. A more recent (2018) YouTube upload of the identical recording, however, credits the filming to Jim Rollhauser. The show was an invitation-only party, and the source of the video is unknown. John Shirts, who helped organize the gig, speculates in 2016: The leading theory is it was shot with a beta cam checked out from the MCAD film department by John Dempsey or Brian Garrity, maybe Chris Ball, who put the event together with his housemates (Tim Schuck, Todd Stinson, John Dempsey, John Vieno -- I think they were all living there at the time.) The video is a bit dark, but steady. Some songs from the first set are likely missing. The drummer in the second set is Spot from SST, who was in town to assist with the production of New Day Rising. The person who uploaded the video to YouTube notes that the audio track is from the soundboard. He also says that there is more video from on the tape, but there are condition issues he hopes to address in the future. Contents: Charity, Chastity, Prudence And Hope Standing In The Rain Back From Somewhere Ice Cold Ice ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Bob Mould Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 18 Oct 1989 Location: Cotton Club, Atlanta Recording Quality: A- Time: 100 min Notes: Camera a little shaky (hand-held 8mm). Contents: [Same as audio tape above] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Nova Mob Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 21 Jan 1990 Location: Lounge Ax, Chicago Recording Quality: A Time: 94:55 Notes: Obviously shot by a person (unidentified) who had permission, some videography skills, and decent equipment. Views, from multiple angles, are unobstructed. Audio (mono) distorts from saturation in a few spots. Members of Run Westy Run (who probably opened) make guest appearances during the set. Contents: [See setlist page] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Bob Mould Format: Audience tape Medium: YouTube upload [from VHS cassette] Date Recorded: 02 Jun 1990 Location: Agora, Cleveland OH Recording Quality: A- Time: 73:21 Notes: Shot from the back of the room using a video camera mounted on a stable platform of some sort, just above the heads of the crowd. Pretty good audio quality, but the video has faded some. First turned up on YouTube in Jan 2017, attributed to the "JEMS Archive." Bob in a feisty mood. Band: Mould/Maimone/Fier. Focus is a little soft, possibly indicating too much reliance on autofocus. Zoom could have been used more frequently on unscreened shots, as Bob's face is somewhat washed out much of the time. Recorded by Ralph Venturino. Contents: [Same as audio tape above except cuts off during "Chartered Trips"] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Grant Hart Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 29 Mar 1991 Location: Maxwell's, Hoboken NJ Recording Quality: A- Time: 57 min Notes: Hand-held camera with unscreened view of the stage and adequate lighting. Shot with 8mm from center near front. Occcasional instability near top of picture. Some graininess. Slight color streaking. Contents: [Same as audio tape above, less soundcheck] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Nova Mob Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 06 Apr 1991 Location: Vrije Vloer, Utrecht NL Recording Quality: B Time: 72 min Notes: Converted from PAL. Shot with 8mm from center, fairly close. Club is very dark and picture suffers from graininess as a result. Wavy vertical noise bars seem to appear whenever there are rapid changes in the lighting; this could be a problem with the camera or a conversion artifact. Contents: [Same as audio tape above] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Nova Mob Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 07 Apr 1991 Location: Vera, Groningen NL Recording Quality: A- Time: 78 min Notes: Converted from PAL. Shot with 8mm from center at fairly close range. Lighting is pretty good. There is hardly any graininess or video noise. Converted from PAL. Picture is decent thanks to adequate lighting. Bob sports a skinhead haircut. A string breaks during "Hardly Getting Over It" and Bob finishes the gig on 11-string guitar. Tape is not in general circulation. Converted from PAL. Camcorder did not cope well with low-light conditions, resulting in grainy picture in most shots. Frequent jitter due to use of max zoom. Tape is not in general circulation. Contents: [Same as audio tape above] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Nova Mob Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 21 May 1992 Location: The Point, Atlanta GA Recording Quality: A Time: 51 min Notes: Shot with tripod. Contents: [Same as audio tape above] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Nova Mob Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 05 Jun 1992 Location: TT the Bear's, Cambridge MA Recording Quality: A Time: 65 min Notes: Audience obstruction of the lower portion of the picture ranges from none to somewhat less than 50%. Because of the brightness and proximity of the spotlight on Grant's face, his features are washed out on some of the longer range shots. Some jitter on tight shots as no tripod was used. Marc Retish is largely obscured by his drum kit. Several nice closeups of Grant and Tom. Contents: Come, Come Old Empire Pink Turns To Blue Oh! Picture nonetheless fairly steady, with occasional audience blockage and jostling. Also a couple of audio dropouts. Audio level low in general. Contents: [Same as audio tape above] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist: Sugar Format: Audience tape Medium: VHS Cassette Date Recorded: 13 Dec 1992 Location: UEA, Norwich UK Recording Quality: A- Time: 58 min Notes: Shot from middle of crowd with hand-held camera. Picture rather shaky (high zoom) with frequent blackouts. Opening song incomplete. Stereo. The date of the show was originally believed to be 12 Dec 1992. That determination was made back when the video recording first surfaced in trade circles, not long after the gig. The videocassette label bore no date, however, and the basis for choosing the 12th is no longer apparent. Multiple sources not available at the time give the date as the 13th: a newspaper print ad and the concert ticket. Grant decked out in his Bivouac t-shirt. Date is uncertain: videotaper believed it to be 26 Dec, but this pre-tour magazine ad lists it as 30 Dec.
