This is the infamous "blue paint" show, in which Grant shoves a female heckler into a paint bucket. Performance is 35 minutes. Last 10 minutes is scuffling and jawing between the band and the audience. "MTC" is sung as "CTA" (get it?). * The date of this show has long been accepted as 23 Mar, but the flyer advertising it lists only 21 and 22 Mar. It's possible that an extra date was added; it's also possible that the 23 Mar date was incorrect all along, and that the show actually occurred on one of the two other dates. In any case, none of the dates can be definitively established without more information. OZ club owner Dem Hopkins recalls, "I think Hüsker Dü played both nights. The blue paint incident was the second night. OZ had presented a show at The Space Place down on Fulton Market and the headline was Black Flag with The Effigies, Strike Under and Naked Ray Gun opening up. Hüsker Dü had come down to see them and so we put them on at OZ--starting at some early morning hour--3AM or 4AM, after the Black Flag show." After doing some research, Dem further elaborates: "They may have played three nights. The blue paint incident was definitely after the Black Flag show and that show was on the 23rd. I just checked. I thought I presented Black Flag two nights at the Space Place--but just one on the 23rd. I remember Grant throwing the bucket of blue paint all over the place after the band finished but it wasn't because of any heckling. The crowd liked them a lot. He was just fucked up and was looking for a big finish--the yelling ensued after he threw the paint because he got it all over Cindy's red leather jacket and she was pissed and her boyfriend wanted to kill Grant." Nonetheless, this recording is a fairly significant upgrade. Comments from the uploader (Guy_R_E): This is an audience recording of a firestorm. Such a sound cannot be captured on a mere cassette tape, but I think a bit of the mania is preserved here for all you Husker Duskers. This was another packed-to-the-gills night in the backroom of Maxwell's and the show starts with Bob telling the crowd that there would be no encore--they wouldn't be able to leave the room and maneuver their way back in through the wall of bodies. This show took place just a few weeks before the release of Zen Arcade-- I'm sure the tour was planned to promote the album, but SST's pressing and distribution had been delayed.
