Section 15--Covers, Tributes

****************************************************************************

The term "tribute" has been extended to include any obvious (or maybe not
so obvious) reference to the band. The Hüsker cover songs listed include
released material for the most part, along with a few demos and privately
distributed recordings. Songs found only on live concert tapes are not
listed unless they have some special significance.

Delivering noise
Real tough boys
What else have I got
Half-priced drugs
Stolen guitars
What else is new
It's somethin to dü
It's somethin to dü
Well it ain't nothin new

Stand around and sweat
Girls you bet
Sure beats working too
Half my stuff's
Broken guitars
Blah blah blah
Somethin to dü
Somethin to dü
It ain't nothin new
It's somethin to ... dü

Somethin to dü
Somethin to dü
Nothin to
It's somethin

Delivering noise
Real tough boys
And what else have I got
Half-priced drugs
Stolen guitars

Said somethin to dü
Somethin to Hüsker

Title: Superstar Concert Series Format: 3x12" LP Label: Westwood One Radio Networks Catalog Number: SS 87-10 Date Recorded: 1987? Air Date: 13-14 Jun 1987 Time: 86:09 Notes: Live cover of "New Day Rising" embedded in four-song medley. NDR segment barely lasts 30 seconds. Not a bad version from the "Addicted To Love" guy. Contents: Medley: 9:32 Planet Of Women/New Day Rising/Nervous/Flesh Wound ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Blue Hippos
Title: Blue Hippos Format: Album (12" only?) Label: Twin/Tone Catalog Number: TTR 87100 Date Recorded: Sep 1986 Release Date: 1987 Time: Notes: Studio cover. Produced by Terry Katzman. Contents: Drug Party ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Masters of the Obvious [Paul Caporino]
Title: Tiny Hateful Dog Format: Album (cassette only) Label: Looks like a homemade job. Catalog Number: MOTO 2 Date Recorded: Unknown Release Date: 1988? Time: Notes: Typical MOTO sendup, though neither as stinging nor as humorous as some. Caporino's cheesy home production (featuring the worst drum machine ever heard anywhere) doesn't help. Contents: Candy Apple Wig ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: The Strangemen
Title: Duck And Cover Format: Album Label: Vielklang Catalog Number: 0425280MLP Date Recorded: Unknown Release Date: 1988 Time: Notes: Studio cover. The Strangemen, an unashamedly Hüskeresque band from Berlin, backed Grant Hart on his Fall 1989 European tour. They have also performed "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" and "Pink Turns To Blue" live. This is an album of cover tunes. The version of "Diane" that appears here later turned up on the the Case Closed compilation described below. Contents: Diane ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Big Dipper
Title: Love Barge Format: CD EP (promo) Label: Epic Catalog Number: ESK 2009 Date Recorded: 03 Feb 1989 Release Date: 1990 Time: 10:30 Notes: Live cover. Recorded by Carl Plaster at the Bottleneck in Lawrence KS. Contents: The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill 3:09 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Squirrel Bait/David Grubbs
Title: Motorola Cloudburst Format: 7" single Label: The Pope Fanzine Catalog Number: None Date Recorded: Unknown Release Date: 25 Nov 1987 Time: Notes: Freebie record included in fanzine. One side is labeled "Bob Mould and Those Pillowbiters/Brown I Read, Oh! My Chones," and the other is labeled "BORK! Gerard's Dick." According to discogs.com and attested elsewhere, the Pillowbiters side is an early unreleased Squirrel Bait track (it certainly sounds as if it could be a Sun God outtake) and the
Bork! side is "tape piece by David Grubbs done for a
Gnosticism class at Georgetown University." The
latter consists of repeated, jumbled samples from
a speech, superimposed over a guitar background:

"And if there's any hope for America it lies in a
revolution. And if there's any hope for revolution
in America, it lies in getting Elvis Presley to
become Che Guevara, because if you don't do that
you'll just be beating your head against the wall,
or the cop in the street will be beating your head
against the wall."

The above rap, it turns out, was delivered by Phil
Ochs during a 27 Mar 1970 performance at Carnegie
Hall. The side ends with a telephone message from an
unknown (but familiar sounding) party:

"Oh, Grubbs is...[indistinct]. I don't know what
the hell is going on with this Esperanto shit. I
guess, speaking of the 100th anniversary of
Esperanto, you just gotta have a message in that
damn language."

For what it's worth, Bob Mould knows nothing about
this record. One source thought the fanzine might
have been called Ajax, but the discogs.com info
sounds more authoritative.

Artist: Calhoun Conquer
Title: Lost In Oneself Format: Album (CD, 12") Label: Aaarrg/Major International Catalog Number: Aaarg 22/MRI 29 [Switzerland release] Date Recorded: Nov 1988 Release Date: 1989 Time: 40:14 Notes: Zürich headbanger band on a hometown label that was apparently well distributed throughout Europe. At times they sound like Motörhead wannabes, but come up a bit short on both energy and strength of material. Their interpretation of "Diane," on the other hand, is downright dirgelike. The release date was most likely mid-1989, which, given the dubious status of the Strangemen album listed above, would seem to credit them with the honor of getting put the first cover version (of many to come) of this song. Contents: Diane 5:51 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Ritmo Tribale
Title: Kriminale
Format: Album (12")
Label: Vox Pop [Italy release]
Catalog Number: Unknown
Date Recorded: Unknown
Release Date: 1989
Time:
Notes: Hüsker song does not appear to be on the 2003(?) CD
combined reissue of Kriminale/Bocca Chiusa. Both
the CD and the LP are out of print and difficult to
find. Furthermore, not all versions of the vinyl LP
include the Hüsker track either; it is absent from
the version distributed in Germany by Sub-Up, which
consists of a 12-track single record (the last track
is "Julian"). This site and this site, however
list 21 tracks, suggesting perhaps a double-LP or
some sort of bonus record? The mystery continues.

Artist: The Anarchy Diner
Title: God's Penis
Format: Album
Label: None
Catalog Number: None
Date Recorded: 15-27 Dec 1991
Release Date: Unreleased
Time: 80 minutes
Notes: Studio cover. It is doubtful at this point that
the album is ever going to be released. The band
is long gone, having briefly mutated in 1994 into
the equally obscure Susquehannah before its members
dispersed, but the masters for all three AD albums
remain in the hands of one of its cofounders. The
Anarchy Diner, however, lives on as an e-zine,
The Diner.

Time: 40:19 Notes: "Apple-O" is Apollo DeLucia, who did everything on this self-produced cassette album and threw in as bonus tracks all of Land Speed Record on side 2
(where he calls himself Äpple-Ö). The songs are
all slowed down and mellowed out, so that this
lasts twice as long as the Hüsker original. High
points include the reggae "I'm Not Interested," a
warped and dissonant "Don't Have A Life," and a
"Tired Of Doing Things" set to the lurching tempo
of a drunken marching band.

Title: Excessive Use Of The Passive Voice Format: Album Label: Raging Rose Catalog Number: RRR10001 Date Recorded: 02 Apr 1994 Release Date: 1994 Time: 65:31 Notes: The cover of "Too Far Down" starts out as a grunt- for-grunt emulation of Bob's rendition by principal Trackstar Angelo Gianni, then goes rockout. Overall this acoustically-dominated album is pleasant enough, with a retro feel to the louder tracks. A couple of songs feature only acoustic guitar and cello as backing instruments, and on these the band sounds uncannily like (Mould-influenced) Jason & Alison. The 30-minute final track consists of a three-minute song, followed by a few minutes of silence, followed by Gianni doing readings of his stories and, I guess, poetry. Contents: Too Far Down 3:51 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

track, a full-speed-ahead cover of "Suspect Device."

Title: unsafe@anyspeed Format: Album (CD5) Label: Cargo Records Catalog Number: card1029 [Canada release] Date Recorded: 1996? Release Date: Fall 1996 Time: 39:55 Notes: Out of print? The song in question is apparently only an indirect tribute to Grant. Kieran Grant wrote in a 31 Oct 1996 Toronto Sun article:

A political song on unsafe@anyspeed about the
not-so-blissful domestic affair between Ontario
and Quebec became Ode To Grant Hart, named for
the Minneapolitan Husker Du drummer.

"It sounded like something Grant Hart would've
written," says Mr. Poopyhead. "And the chorus,
`I don't know what she's crying for,' made a
lousy title.

"We always have these rough songs with working
titles, and every record has at least one Husker
Du Song."

Mr. Poopyhead is thrilled to hear that the song
resembles a Huskers tune enough to actually
warrant the title. Which is not a common thing
amongst musicians who usually hate any
comparisons to their work, let alone make their
own comparisons.

Oddly enough, it could be argued the song itself
owes more to Mould than Hart: the main verse riff
has been appropriated from "Flip Your Wig" and the
chorus line quoted in the article above is more
than a little reminiscent (melodically as well as
lyrically) of "I don't even know what I'm crying
for" from the chorus of "Could You Be The One?"
Overall, the album is solid punkpop, sounding a
lot like the Doughboys. Digipak.

Three different female lead singers (Lori Allison sounds a lot like Sandy Denny), keyboards, cello, subdued guitars. Very nice stuff. Frank from Big Drill Car discusses the song in the
liner notes: "This one's from a session in early
94. Recorded for a German HUSKER DU comp that we
never got copies of. We're releasing it on this
comp in hopes of getting copies of it. At the time,
BIG DRILL CAR was on hiatus. Keith our drummer was
in Santa Fe and our bassist Darren was in Tahiti.
So Mark and I decided to throw something together
with Josh Freeze since we were all HUSKER DU fans.
Mark already knew the songs begin to finish. I
learned the bass parts and booked recording time at
Chris's Control World in Costa Mesa. A few short
takes later and you end up with a sonic feast fit
for the most astute HUSKER or BIG DRILL fan."

Teresa Lewis describes the tracks as follows:

Come Around (Perihelion): what might have happened
if Bob had been on a mellow rather than manic kick
while recording Beaster. I.e., "I've done
my share of pot...I've done my share of weed..."

Hoover Dam (Jeff Hoppe): a banjo (?) solo from space
and a vocal that for some reason reminds me of Ween
(sorry, Jeff!).

Eiffel Tower High (The Intentions): very close to
CAG version, if a little looser. A fun romp through
one of my personal favorite Hüsker songs.

Ice Cold Ice (Kevin Keller): dense layers of electric
guitars, a drum machine (?) that captures Grant's
outro, and a cool acoustic guitar straight out of
"Classical Gas."

Explode And Make Up (Justin And Robert): what it might
sound like if Bob could hire his alter-ego to do
guitar solos during acoustic gigs.

Afraid Of Being Wrong (Test Pattern): Yes! somebody had to cover earlier Bob as a reminder of where this all came from. Loud, tight and very professional. JC Auto (Mark Bell): Whoa. Samples from the cult movie "The Wicker Man" are just the beginning. It sorta grows on you. Slick (Pierre Parrant): "sensitive" chord changes, Gregorian chanting and squealing tires recorded not far from HD's birthplace; it's karma. Gee Angel (Madison Avenue): I imagine this would've been the hüsker's approach to this song, had they had the chance. Revved up, with big shout-along vocals (always a plus). Powerline (Neil Tergett): layers and layers of crackling electricity. Plus you can understand the words for a change. After All The Roads Have Led To Nowhere (Vote For Noah): fast, intimate (can these coexist?). With a passionate vocal. Clownmaster (Just Pi): Sugar goes garage--viva los early sixties. Dreaming I Am (Starts With S): a totally radical arrangement, using cello, piano, and mandolin (yes!!) to turn bob into chamber music, without the potential boredom factor. Beautiful. These Important Years (Cynical Spin): if HD had been on good enough terms to go camping together during Warehouse and rehearse around the fire, this
would've been it.

Too Far Down (Bartt Richards): pared-down, powerful
guitarwork and a vocal that gets at the heart of the
song without being exploitive. not an easy thing.

Title: Ultrasound Format: Album Label: Big Deal Records Catalog Number: 9037-2 Date Recorded: Sep 1996 Release Date: Jun 1997 Time: 31:37 Notes: For some reason, there seems to be consensus that the song "Hüsker Dü" is about the game, rather than the band, but the lyrics suggest otherwise; the following is from the Splitsville website:

HUSKER DU
The summer was not too bad
The winter was not much worse
Remember the times we had
Is there nothin' to make this work ?

Do you remember ?

You said this was just a game
I said you were much to kind
And what is it in a name ?
You said that's not hard to find

Do you remember ?
Sometimes I forget myself

The drummer was not too bad
The singer was not much worse
I'm feeling like I've been had
There is nothing to make this work

Do you remember . . . .

Band evolved from Greenberry Woods. Album also
includes a song called "The Kids Who Kill For Sugar,"
which does not appear to be a reference to the band.

Title: KPOP Format: Album Label: Nub Records Catalog Number: BGUM 0012 Date Recorded: Aug-Nov 1996 Release Date: 1997 Time: 25:16 Notes: Female-vocal-driven alterna-pop from Norman OK. It breaks no new ground, but is often catchy. In its punkier moments the band evokes Sleater-Kinney. The tribute to Bob is a fairly nice mid-tempo rocker written by main songwriter Jennifer Abbott, who also handles the vocals. Here's an attempt to decipher the lyrics (how many song-title references can you spot?): Candied apple in a red hot spotlight You don't have to tell us what you did last night By the sea you made your love to me, yeah With a capital P[?] that rhymes with B And that stands for... Title: Land Speed Sonic Format: Album Label: Berserk Records Catalog Number: BK 001 [Italy release] Date Recorded: Unknown Release Date: 1997 Time: 44:31 Notes: An engaging collection of Hüsker covers by an assortment of Italian bands. Most of the renditions are pretty faithful to the originals, but there are a few eyebrow-raisers like Shock Treatment's "Too Much Spice," for which they apparently decided to make up their own tune, and Burning Defeat's acoustic today-was-my-first-guitar-lesson version of "I Apologize." Some of the musicianship is indeed crude, and the English is occasionally endearingly fractured, but the participants' affection for Hüsker Dü is plain. Artist: Semisonic Title: Closing Time Format CD single Label: MCA Catalog Number: MCSTD 40221/155645-2 Date Recorded: 1997? Release Date: 1999 Time: 12:36 Notes: Teresa Lewis wrote in Dec 1997: "Semisonic [...] have a song that's obliquely about Bob on their next record. (This was confirmed by the immensely talented guitarist in the band who wrote it.)" The song in question was eventually released as a b-side on this CD single (Closing Time). The
guitarist/songwriter in question is Dan Wilson.
Is the song about Bob, obliquely or otherwise?
Here are the lyrics; you be the judge:

Well the one man band is on his way again
After all the leaves have turned
And a long way around it is his only friend
After all his bridges have burned

He says bye, bye, baby bye bye
Now he's going away for good
Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Better do like you should
Yeah, you better be good now

There's a lot more sugar and a lot less snow
In the places where he needs to go
There's a long, long list of everywhere but home
And that's exactly where he's dying to roam

He says bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Better do like you should
Everybody be good now

Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
A long way from home [4x]

He says bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Better do like you should
Yeah you better be good now

Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Better do like you should
Everybody be good now

Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good

straightforward cover, but Billie Joe's vocals pale

keeping with the label name, is, uh, not exactly
suitable for children.

Title: Format: CD EP Label: Pattern 25 Records Catalog Number: P2503 Date Recorded: Unknown Release Date: 19 Jun 2001 Time: 25:20 Notes: All cover tunes (Ween, Madonna) on this solo effort by the Posies' Jon Auer, but this CD is no joke. "Tears" (Chameleons) is a standout. Nice rendition of Grant's song too. Contents: Green Eyes 3:15 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: Pleasure Of Ruins Format: CD Label: Motorcoat Records/Victoria Land Records Catalog Number: 7-89397-71862-9 Date Recorded: 2001? Release Date: Sep 2001 Time: 38:42 Notes: Low-key, occasionally drony, pop album with a few minor gems. The song listed below namechecks Hüsker Dü in its second verse: Whatever happened to a band like Hüsker Dü? They should have been superstars, I doubt they made much money I wonder if my heroes ever make the Hall of Fame? I heard that one was working For an advertising agency (Liner notes refer to the song title as "One Thing About Cleveland.) Artist: Crummy Stuff Title: The Way We Listen To.. Format: Album (CD5) Label: Ammonia Records Catalog Number: SIAE WR1020122 [Italy] Date Recorded: Jul 2000-Feb 2002 Release Date: May 2002 Time: 33:48 Notes: All covers album by this Italian punk band. Their straightforward but satisfying rendition of "New Day Rising" is, interestingly enough, available on iTunes (but judging from the song samples, the best track on the album has got to be their punked-up, charmingly-accented interpretation of "You Shook Me All Night Long"). Contents: New Day Rising 2:23 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Nitrominds Title: Fire And Gasoline Format: CD Label: Deep Six Records Catalog Number: DS-42 Date Recorded: Mar 2000 Release Date: 25 Jun 2002 Time: 17:24 Notes: Ten hardcore ditties in just over 17 minutes from Brasilian punksters André, Edu and Lalo makes for a pretty frenetic (if not quite LSR-ish) pace. Not bad stuff. The Hüsker cover is faithful to the original. Contents: Something I Learned Today 1:51 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: Never Corner A Mitchell... ...See How He Reacts Format: Split 7" Label: Compulsive Blasphemer Records Catalog Number: BP-01 [in runout] Date Recorded: May 2001 Release Date: 01 Jul 2002 Time: 4:32 [Infestation Of Ass side] 6:35 [He Who Corrupts side] Notes: Speedcore band Infestation Of Ass was apparently from St Louis. Their cover of "Bricklayer" was the final track on their side of the split 7" shared with the more metallish screamers, He Who Corrupts. Contents: Bricklayer :36 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: Melt Format: CD EP Label: Sciflyer Catalog Number: SCI002 Date Recorded: Early 2002? Release Date: Summer? 2002 Time: 15:38 Notes: Nice stuff (presumably self-released), reminiscent of a slightly revved-up Lanterna on this 3-song EP. The Hüsker cover manages eerily to capture the boxy sound of the NDR mix. Contents: Powerline 3:09 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: something/everything! Format: Album (CD) Label: K Records Catalog Number: klp 132 Date Recorded: 2002? Release Date: 20 Aug 2002 Time: 37:59 Notes: Although it's arguably one of the weaker tracks on this fine album of quirky indiepop tunes, "Jet Ski Accidents" features an explicit Hüsker Dü reference: Tell me at least six things You may or may not consider personal I'm not talking jet ski accidents Rather truly words you thought you'd never say And don't you think we should kiss While the Hüsker Dü is playing? Do you like Grant Hart songs? Do you like Bob Mould songs? (yup) And have you ever sung along with New Day Rising? Babapapa babapapapa... lalala lala Ah, it's all just indie rock! Title: Nothing's Going To Happen Format: Album (CD) Label: Orange Twin Records Catalog Number: 011 Date Recorded: 2002 Release Date: 01 Oct 2002 Time: 52:05 Notes: Kind of a weird departure for these Elephant Six vets -- an album of nothing but covers, mostly punk and new wave classics ("Pay To Cum," "I Walked With The Zombie," Kotton Crown"). The sitar break on the Hüsker tune is a pleasing touch. Contents: Never Talking To You Again 1:51 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord
). The Hüsker song is slightly mistitled
("Learnt"). Interesting range of bands covered,
including, Dwarves, Bad Brains, MC5, Jerry's Kids,
Black Sabbath, Twisted Sister.

More of the tracks will end up on the iPod than not. The "Never Talking" cover starts quietly, gets frenetic, and ends with a longish, backwards-tracking, psychedelic coda. The song "Race Against Time" sounds like GBH circa 1982 (not
a bad thing at all).

Title: Fidel Bastro ZEHN B Format: Album (CD5) Label: Fidel Bastro Catalog Number: FB 26/EFA CD 06261 [Germany] Date Recorded: 1999 Release Date: 2002 Time: 79:01 Notes: Compilation album celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Fidel Bastro label. Hüsker cover recorded live in Hamburg, a decent enough acoustic rendition with female vocals credited to"Gwendolin" (but a male voice is also audible). Represented musical styles range from punk to noise to pop to folk to avant-skronk -- mostly German bands, but Bastro and David Grubbs show up. Explanatory excerpt from the label website: Fidel Bastro was founded in 1992 with the intention to release the new CD/LP of the legendary american Noise-Band Bastro in Germany. But Bastro broke up and the members formed a new project called Gastr' del Sol. So it was their work 'A Serpentine Similar' which became the first Fidel Bastro-release. Artist: My Own Worst Enemy Title: No Guarantees Format: Album (CD5) Label: ELIS EIL Records Catalog Number: EE05 Date Recorded: 2003? Release Date: 23 Sep 2003 Time: 39:29 Notes: Not a bad effort at all by this Boston-area band. Style generally falls into the post-punk category. Nice tribute to Mia Zapata is one of several strong tracks. Lots of fuzzy guitar on "Never Talking," and a decent job by lead vocalist Susan Minichiello. Album recorded by musician/engineer/all around good guy Pete Weiss.

Release Date: 14 Oct 2003 Time: 45:41 Notes: NJ band Ensign belts out a nice selection of punk rock hits on this all-covers album. Great job on Dag Nasty's "I've Heard." The project is obviously a labor of love. Other bands covered include Bad Brains, Misfits, Sick Of It All, Negative Approach, Descendents, Discharge. Artist: Anodyne Title: Salo Format: CD EP Label: Init Records Catalog Number: INIT-15 Date Recorded: 03 Mar 2002 Release Date: 2004 Time: 23:01 Notes: Pretty much pure metal. Vocals sound a lot like the Napalm Death guy's roar voice (but not the squeal voice). Hüsker influences are apparent in the guitar tone and in the less metallish tunes. Band dissolved in 2005. Contents: Beyond The Threshold 1:29 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: I Hope The End Is Always The Beginning Format: Compilation album (CD5) Label: Snuffy Smile Catalog Number: smile-040 [Japan] Date Recorded: 2002? Release Date: Late 2002 Time: 66:01 Notes: Bunch of Japanese punk bands each doing one original and one cover song. Life Indicator's interpretation of "In A Free Land" sticks close to the Hüsker version; much of its entertainment value derives from the sincere effort at singing in English. Band members include Nato (drums & vocals), Shima (guitar & vocals), and Kubo (bass & vocals). Other artists cwon the album: Baggage, Bottledirt, Evomom, lots more. Simply packaged with no jewel case or inlay cards, just the liner notes booklet and the disc itself in a clear plastic sleeve. Contents: In A Free Land 2:40 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Poster Children Title: On The Offensive Format: CD EP Label: Hidden Agenda Catalog Number: AHA!070 Date Recorded: 2004? Release Date: 21 Sep 2004 Time: 20:05 Notes: We all love the Poster Children, of course. Weren't they after all one of the first truly net-savvy (not to mention fan-friendly) bands? Who couldn't love a band that titles one of their albums RTFM?
Anyhow, this EP finds them doing half a dozen cover
songs all suggestive of a certain dearth of
enthusiasm for military-based problem solving. All
the tracks are solid; the Hüsker cover and its
delicious riff are handled with due reverence.

Title: Black Holes In The Sand Format: CD EP Label: Warp Records Catalog Number: WAP181CD Date Recorded: 2004? Release Date: 02 Nov 2004 Time: 31:40 Notes: Long, acousticky, shoegazery songs. Nick Talbot actually sings the verse lines of "Diane," rather than recite them as Grant does in the original. Artist: 20 Minute Loop Title: yawn + house = explosion Format: Album (CD5) Label: Fortune Records Catalog Number: FR-41422 Date Recorded: 21-23 Sep 2003 Release Date: 22 Feb 2005 Time: 44:16 Notes: The album is mostly pop stuff, sometimes Beatlesque, sometimes breathy-angsty, with occasional forays into punkier territory. Not bad at all. The Hüsker cover is delivered with appropriate urgency -- and its arrangement, interestingly enough, includes a brass section; even more interestingly, the concept actually works. Title: Tolerance. A Tribute To Grant Hart Format: 7" single Label: Saved By Radio Catalog Number: SBR2541 Date Recorded: Jan 2005 (A side) ??? 2005 (B side) Release Date: Jun? 2005 Time: 7:06 Notes: Split single tribute to Grant Hart. A-side by The Maykings, B-side by Lorrie Matheson & the Brass
Tacks. The Maykings, from Edmonton, do a pretty
straight cover of "Keep Hanging On," with countryish
inflections. Calgary artist Matheson's cover of
"2541" is a little more off-center, and downright
gorgeous.

Artist: Richmond Fontaine Title: Obliteration By Time Format: Album (CD5) Label: El Cortez Records Catalog Number: None Date Recorded: Jan 2005 Release Date: 16 Aug 2005 Time: 62:34 Notes: Richmond Fontaine isn't a person but an alt-country band from Portland OR in the Uncle Tupelo tradition (but with more members and instruments). The Hüsker cover is pretty straightforward, delivered with minimal twang. Grant gets songwriting credit. The packaging consists of a folded paper sleeve inside a clear plastic envelope. Title: Am Go-Go Snack Format: Album (LP/CD5) Label: Ritchie Records Catalog Number: RitRec 029 [Germany release] Date Recorded: 1989-1991 Release Date: 1991 (LP)/2005 (CD) Time: 51:30 Notes: The brainchild of a character named Olifr M. Guz, who wrote all the songs except the three covers. The album was remastered and reissued in 2005. The style is a litte tricky to classify, sort of minimalist surf-goth-punk with a retro feel. The funereally-delivered Hüsker song is (deliberately?) mistitled, and it's not clear (mainly because I can't quite parse the German liner notes) if it was included on the original LP release. Contents: I'll Never Talking To You Again 1:42 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Train Title: For Me, It's You Format: Album (CD5) Label: Columbia Records Catalog Number: 82796 94472 2 Date Recorded: Aug-Sep 2005 Release Date: 31 Jan 2006 Time: 48:22 Notes: A placid rendition, set amongst a batch of placid songs. The vocalist, Pat Monahan, sounds awfully similar in style to Ryan Adams. The Bob Mould song appears without accreditation (in fact, there are no songwriting credits listed at all). Contents: If I Can't Change Your Mind 3:07 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Bugs Multiply Title: Bugs Multiply Format: Album (CD5) Label: Coma Gun Music Catalog Number: Date Recorded: 2006 Release Date: 14 Mar 2006 Time: 61:44 Notes: The "tribute" song isn't directly about Hüsker Dü although it includes references to the band and to "Pink Turns To Blue." Here's an attempt at the lyrics: Each room was carpeted pink or blue Small velvet chairs of pink or blue Everything backlit by black light People sitting on the floors in pairs The soft, fuzzy carpet creeping up their backs All I could think is Hüsker Dü Pink turns to blue ooo-oo-oooh Telling everyone about your scars in you (???) Telling everyone about your scars The party was in ____ and it was trashed all over Something like a tornado scene with alcohol I think I was sitting in in the garage There were no walls Just some stairs going nowhere Pink turns to blue ooo-oo-oooh Telling everyone about your scars in you (???) Telling everyone about your scars All I could think is Hüsker Dü Pink turns to blue ooo-oo-oooh Telling everyone about your scars in you (???) Telling everyone about your scars in you (???) Yeah.... Telling everyone about your scars in you (???) So, this is an indie-rock band from Asheville. They describe themselves as a cross between Foo Fighters and Hüsker Dü, but I hear more Minutemen than Hüsker in their style. Artist: Robbie Lee Title: Sleep, Memory Format: Album (CD5) Label: I & Ear Records Catalog Number: I&E 06 Date Recorded: Release Date: 21 Mar 2006 Time: 56:22 Notes: This is mostly acoustic stuff, sort of folky and a little twisted. NY singer-songwriter Robbie Lee's guitar style is reminiscent of Eugene Chadbourne's, if Eugene had remembered to take his Ritalin. The "Chartered Trips" cover also features what sounds like a saxophone, and a few other instruments. Title: Planet Television Format: Album (CD5) Label: The Wonderful Music Of Catalog Number: WMO 90401 [NL] Date Recorded: 45:34 Release Date: 24 Jul 2006 Time: Notes: Ridiculously short and stunningly awful rendition of Bob's theme song for The Daily Show, originally performed by him, later by They Might Be Giants. CD also includes themes from House, Lost, 24, Desperate Housewives, several other shows. Contents: Dog On Fire :36 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Thomas Belhom Title: No Border Format: Album (CD5) Label: Ici D'Ailleurs... Catalog Number: IDA 036 [France] Date Recorded: Release Date: 2006 Time: 37:31 Soft rock with acoustic guitar and lots of other instruments, typically subdued. Occasional hints of country and Caribbean influences, the latter in evidence on the "Pink Turns To Blue" cover, which is delivered in whispery, French-accented vocals with backing vox by Kim Ohio. (The song is attributed to "Hüsker Dü" rather than Grant.) Contents: Pink Turns To Blue 4:23 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Mark Davis Title: Mistakes I Meant To Make Format: Album (CD5) Label: Saved By Radio Catalog Number: SBRDAVE2 Date Recorded: Release Date: Spring 2007 Time: 35:54 Notes: Solo album (one of a pair, released simultaneously) by Canadian alt-country artist Mark Davis, also a key figure in the considerably more energetic Edmonton band Old Reliable. This album is pretty,
uh, laid-back. Davis's style sounds a little like
Alejandro Escovedo and a lot like Sam Beam. The
trombone on "She Floated Away" is an interesting
idea that can't quite lift the song from the
doldrums. Selected tracks from the two solo CDs
are collected on a vinyl LP, Parts I And II, that
also includes the Hüsker cover.
