Section 15--Covers, Tributes

****************************************************************************

The term "tribute" has been extended to include any obvious (or maybe not
so obvious) reference to the band. The Hüsker cover songs listed include
released material for the most part, along with a few demos and privately
distributed recordings. Songs found only on live concert tapes are not
listed unless they have some special significance.

				Real tough boys
				What else have I got
				Half-priced drugs
				Stolen guitars
				What else is new
				It's somethin to dü
				It's somethin to dü
				Well it ain't nothin new

				Stand around and sweat
				Girls you bet
				Sure beats working too
				Half my stuff's
				Broken guitars
				Blah blah blah
				Somethin to dü
				Somethin to dü
				It ain't nothin new
				It's somethin to ... dü

				Somethin to dü
				Somethin to dü

Notes: Studio cover. The Strangemen, an unashamedly
Hüskeresque band from Berlin, backed Grant Hart
on his Fall 1989 European tour. They have also
performed "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" and
"Pink Turns To Blue" live. This is an album of
cover tunes. The version of "Diane" that appears
here later turned up on the the Case Closed
			compilation described below.

Artist: Squirrel Bait/David Grubbs
Title: Motorola Cloudburst
Format: 7" single
Label: The Pope Fanzine
Catalog Number: None
Date Recorded: Unknown
Release Date: 25 Nov 1987
Time:
Notes: Freebie record included in fanzine. One side is
labeled "Bob Mould and Those Pillowbiters/Brown I
Read, Oh! My Chones," and the other is labeled
"BORK! Gerard's Dick." According to discogs.com
and attested elsewhere, the Pillowbiters side is an
early unreleased Squirrel Bait track (it certainly
sounds as if it could be a Sun God outtake) and the
Bork! side is "tape piece by David Grubbs done for a
Gnosticism class at Georgetown University." The
latter consists of repeated, jumbled samples from
a speech, superimposed over a guitar background:

"And if there's any hope for America it lies in a
revolution. And if there's any hope for revolution
in America, it lies in getting Elvis Presley to
become Che Guevara, because if you don't do that
you'll just be beating your head against the wall,
or the cop in the street will be beating your head
                          against the wall."

The above rap, it turns out, was delivered by Phil
Ochs during a 27 Mar 1970 performance at Carnegie
Hall. The side ends with a telephone message from an
			unknown (but familiar sounding) party:

                          "Oh, Grubbs is...[indistinct]. I don't know what
the hell is going on with this Esperanto shit. I
guess, speaking of the 100th anniversary of
Esperanto, you just gotta have a message in that
                          damn language."

For what it's worth, Bob Mould knows nothing about
this record. One source thought the fanzine might
have been called Ajax, but the discogs.com info
			sounds more authoritative.

Artist: Calhoun Conquer
Title: Lost In Oneself
Format: Album (CD, 12")
Label: Aaarrg/Major International
Catalog Number: Aaarg 22/MRI 29 [Switzerland release]
Date Recorded: Nov 1988
Release Date: 1989
Time: 40:14
Notes: Zürich headbanger band on a hometown label that
was apparently well distributed throughout Europe.
At times they sound like Motörhead wannabes, but
come up a bit short on both energy and strength of
material. Their interpretation of "Diane," on
the other hand, is downright dirgelike. The
release date was most likely mid-1989, which, given
the dubious status of the Strangemen album listed
above, would seem to credit them with the honor of
getting put the first cover version (of many to
			come) of this song.

Title: Kriminale
Format: Album (12")
Label: Vox Pop [Italy release]
Catalog Number: Unknown
Date Recorded: Unknown
Release Date: 1989
Time:
Notes: Hüsker song does not appear to be on the 2003(?) CD
combined reissue of Kriminale/Bocca Chiusa. Both
the CD and the LP are out of print and difficult to
find. Furthermore, not all versions of the vinyl LP
include the Hüsker track either; it is absent from
the version distributed in Germany by Sub-Up, which
consists of a 12-track single record (the last track
is "Julian"). This site and this site, however
list 21 tracks, suggesting perhaps a double-LP or
some sort of bonus record? The mystery continues.

Notes: Studio cover. It is doubtful at this point that
the album is ever going to be released. The band
is long gone, having briefly mutated in 1994 into
the equally obscure Susquehannah before its members
dispersed, but the masters for all three AD albums
remain in the hands of one of its cofounders. The

Date Recorded: Unknown
Release Date: 1993
Time: 46:11
Notes: Mellowed-out rendition with female lead vox (Kirsten
Rian, who sings a little like Chrissie Hynde).
The band appears to be from the Pacific Northwest,
most likely Oregon. There is little information in
the liner notes and little energy in the songs.

Catalog Number: STI 004
Date Recorded: 1992, 1993
Release Date: 1993?
Time: 40:19
Notes: "Apple-O" is Apollo DeLucia, who did everything
on this self-produced cassette album and threw in
as bonus tracks all of Land Speed Record on side 2
(where he calls himself Äpple-Ö). The songs are
all slowed down and mellowed out, so that this
lasts twice as long as the Hüsker original. High
points include the reggae "I'm Not Interested," a
warped and dissonant "Don't Have A Life," and a
"Tired Of Doing Things" set to the lurching tempo
			of a drunken marching band.

Label: Raging Rose
Catalog Number: RRR10001
Date Recorded: 02 Apr 1994
Release Date: 1994
Time: 65:31
Notes: The cover of "Too Far Down" starts out as a grunt-
for-grunt emulation of Bob's rendition by principal
Trackstar Angelo Gianni, then goes rockout. Overall
this acoustically-dominated album is pleasant enough,
with a retro feel to the louder tracks. A couple of
songs feature only acoustic guitar and cello as backing
instruments, and on these the band sounds uncannily
			like (Mould-influenced) Jason & Alison. The 30-minute
final track consists of a three-minute song, followed
by a few minutes of silence, followed by Gianni doing
readings of his stories and, I guess, poetry.

have different B-sides. Nice, faithful rendition.

Date Recorded: 1996?
Release Date: Fall 1996
Time: 39:55
Notes: Out of print? The song in question is apparently
only an indirect tribute to Grant. Kieran Grant
wrote in a 31 Oct 1996 Toronto Sun article:

A political song on unsafe@anyspeed about the
			  not-so-blissful domestic affair between Ontario
and Quebec became Ode To Grant Hart, named for
			  the Minneapolitan Husker Du drummer.

"It sounded like something Grant Hart would've
written," says Mr. Poopyhead. "And the chorus,
                          `I don't know what she's crying for,' made a
			  lousy title.

"We always have these rough songs with working
titles, and every record has at least one Husker
                          Du Song."

Mr. Poopyhead is thrilled to hear that the song
resembles a Huskers tune enough to actually
warrant the title. Which is not a common thing
amongst musicians who usually hate any
comparisons to their work, let alone make their
                          own comparisons.

Oddly enough, it could be argued the song itself
owes more to Mould than Hart: the main verse riff
has been appropriated from "Flip Your Wig" and the
chorus line quoted in the article above is more
than a little reminiscent (melodically as well as
lyrically) of "I don't even know what I'm crying
for" from the chorus of "Could You Be The One?"
Overall, the album is solid punkpop, sounding a
			lot like the Doughboys. Digipak.

Frank from Big Drill Car discusses the song in the

			94. Recorded for a German HUSKER DU comp that we
never got copies of. We're releasing it on this
comp in hopes of getting copies of it. At the time,
BIG DRILL CAR was on hiatus. Keith our drummer was
in Santa Fe and our bassist Darren was in Tahiti.
So Mark and I decided to throw something together
with Josh Freeze since we were all HUSKER DU fans.
Mark already knew the songs begin to finish. I
learned the bass parts and booked recording time at
Chris's Control World in Costa Mesa. A few short
takes later and you end up with a sonic feast fit
for the most astute HUSKER or BIG DRILL fan."

Teresa Lewis describes the tracks as follows:

Come Around (Perihelion): what might have happened
if Bob had been on a mellow rather than manic kick
while recording Beaster. I.e., "I've done
my share of pot...I've done my share of weed..."

Hoover Dam (Jeff Hoppe): a banjo (?) solo from space
and a vocal that for some reason reminds me of Ween
                          (sorry, Jeff!).

Eiffel Tower High (The Intentions): very close to
CAG version, if a little looser. A fun romp through
one of my personal favorite Hüsker songs.

Ice Cold Ice (Kevin Keller): dense layers of electric
guitars, a drum machine (?) that captures Grant's
outro, and a cool acoustic guitar straight out of
                          "Classical Gas."

Explode And Make Up (Justin And Robert): what it might
sound like if Bob could hire his alter-ego to do
                          guitar solos during acoustic gigs.

Afraid Of Being Wrong (Test Pattern): Yes! somebody
had to cover earlier Bob as a reminder of where this
all came from. Loud, tight and very professional.

JC Auto (Mark Bell): Whoa. Samples from the cult
movie "The Wicker Man" are just the beginning. It
                          sorta grows on you.

Slick (Pierre Parrant): "sensitive" chord changes,
Gregorian chanting and squealing tires recorded not
far from HD's birthplace; it's karma.

Gee Angel (Madison Avenue): I imagine this would've
been the hüsker's approach to this song, had
they had the chance. Revved up, with big shout-along
                          vocals (always a plus).

Powerline (Neil Tergett): layers and layers of
crackling electricity. Plus you can understand the
                          words for a change.

After All The Roads Have Led To Nowhere (Vote For
Noah): fast, intimate (can these coexist?). With
                          a passionate vocal.

Clownmaster (Just Pi): Sugar goes garage--viva los
                          early sixties.

Dreaming I Am (Starts With S): a totally radical
arrangement, using cello, piano, and mandolin (yes!!)
to turn bob into chamber music, without the potential
                          boredom factor. Beautiful.

These Important Years (Cynical Spin): if HD had been
on good enough terms to go camping together during
Warehouse and rehearse around the fire, this
                          would've been it.

Too Far Down (Bartt Richards): pared-down, powerful
guitarwork and a vocal that gets at the heart of the
song without being exploitive. not an easy thing.

the song "Hüsker Dü" is about the game, rather than
the band, but the lyrics suggest otherwise; the
following is from the Splitsville website:

                                          HUSKER DU

The drummer was not too bad
The singer was not much worse
I'm feeling like I've been had

Band evolved from Greenberry Woods. Album also
includes a song called "The Kids Who Kill For Sugar,"

Notes: Portsmouth NH band Heavens To Murgatroid had a
good run in the 90s, disbanding not too long after
this album was released. This "Divide And Conquer"
cover doesn't quite soar like the original, but is
still an enjoyable listen because of the dual
			guitars and alternating vocals.

Label: MCA
Catalog Number: MCSTD 40221/155645-2
Date Recorded: 1997?
Release Date: 1999
Time: 12:36
Notes: Teresa Lewis wrote in Dec 1997: "Semisonic [...]
have a song that's obliquely about Bob on their
next record. (This was confirmed by the immensely
talented guitarist in the band who wrote it.)"

The song in question was eventually released as a
b-side on this CD single (Closing Time). The
guitarist/songwriter in question is Dan Wilson.
Is the song about Bob, obliquely or otherwise?
Here are the lyrics; you be the judge:

Well the one man band is on his way again
After all the leaves have turned
And a long way around it is his only friend
After all his bridges have burned

He says bye, bye, baby bye bye
Now he's going away for good
			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
			  Better do like you should
Yeah, you better be good now

There's a lot more sugar and a lot less snow
In the places where he needs to go
There's a long, long list of everywhere but home
And that's exactly where he's dying to roam

He says bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
			  Better do like you should
			  Everybody be good now

			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
A long way from home [4x]

He says bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
			  Better do like you should
Yeah you better be good now

			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good
			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
			  Better do like you should
			  Everybody be good now

			  Bye, bye, baby bye bye
Yes he's going away for good

Release Date: Dec? 2000
Time: 8:33
Notes: Recorded for the pilot of a projected MTV series
called "Influences," in which Green Day pays tribute
to Hüsker Dü as their primary "influence." Warning:
there are lots of Green Day CDs called Warning, but
the one with the Hüsker song is one of two UK CD
singles bearing that title. The CD of interest is
sometimes called "Warning, Part 1" or "CD 1." The
track listing mistakenly gives the song title as "I
Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely." It's a
straightforward cover, but Billie Joe's vocals pale
			in comparison to Grant's.

Notes: Compilation album of Dutch postpunk "minimalist"
bands, including Trio Hell, Feetwarmers, Pig Meat,

Time: 58:45
Notes: These beguiling Italian lads grind out old-school
punk thrash with growly Napalm Death style vocals.
This album collects all of the band's studio output,
plus a live performance from Utrecht

Notes: Low-key, occasionally drony, pop album with a few
minor gems. The song listed below namechecks

Notes: All covers album by this Italian punk band. Their
straightforward but satisfying rendition of "New Day
Rising" is, interestingly enough, available on

Notes: This Swedish "heavy" punk band obviously recorded a

Notes: Metal-psych-punk? More of the tracks will end up on
the iPod than not. The "Never Talking" cover starts
quietly, gets frenetic, and ends with a longish,

			a bad thing at all).

Time: 79:01
Notes: Compilation album celebrating the 10th anniversary
of the Fidel Bastro label. Hüsker cover recorded
live in Hamburg, a decent enough acoustic rendition
with female vocals credited to "Gwendolin" (but a
male voice is also audible). Represented musical
styles range from punk to noise to pop to folk to
avant-skronk -- mostly German bands, but Bastro and
			David Grubbs show up.

Explanatory excerpt from the label website:

Fidel Bastro was founded in 1992 with the
intention to release the new CD/LP of the
			  legendary american Noise-Band Bastro in
Germany. But Bastro broke up and the members
formed a new project called Gastr' del Sol.
So it was their work 'A Serpentine Similar'
which became the first Fidel Bastro-release.

Notes: Mostly laid-back, lyrics-centric stuff from Cardiff,
Wales artist Ash Cooke, with some vocals apparently
performed by his wife, Iona. The album was first
released in 2004 with just a plastic sleeve and
inkjet-printed folded paper insert, accompanied by
a 6"x8" lyric booklet. The 2006 Folkwit version was
issued with a somewhat more elaborate folding plastic
sleeve, an additional paper insert, and slightly
different disc artwork. The Hüsker tribute is a
spoken monolog over a background of acoustic guitar
and repetitive, swishy-sounding samples. The lyrics,
as they appear in the booklet, with no (intentional)
			changes to spelling or punctuation:

			 FRAZZLE

I GUESS IT ALL STARTED WITH THE DEATH OF
MY BROTHER, IN A FREAK AUTOMOBILE
ACCIDENT IN 1971. I WAS 10 YEARS OLD AND
SUDDENLY I OWNED A SET OF DRUMS

BY THE AGE OF 13 I WAS A STAND-IN DRUMER
FOR AN AGENCY THAT BOOKED WEDDINGS AND
PARTIES, WHERE ALL KINDS OF MUSIC WAS
REQUESTED AND EXPECTED. AT A GREEK NEW
YEARS EVE PARTY I FOUND MYSELF OVER MY
HEAD PLYING EXOTIC TIME SIGNATURES AND
SUDDEN CHANGES IN STRUCTURE. THE BAZUKI
PLAYER TOLD ME TO USE MY BRUSHES AND GO
THROUGH THE MOTIONS WITHOUT MAKING A
SOUND. I THOUGHT THAT IF THE PEOPLE HAD
PAID FOR A DRUMER, A DRUMER THEY WERE
			 GOING TO GET.
THAT NIGHT THERE AWS A FIVE CAR PILE-UP
OUT SIDE THE HALL THAT DISTRACTED THE
GREEK PARTYGOERS FOR MOST OF OUR SET.
I WAS SO CRUSHED THAT I GAVE UP GREEK
			 MUSIC FOREVER.

MY PARENTS LIVING ROOM SOON BECAME A
			 REPOSITORY FOR AMPLIFIERS,
			 DRUMS,GUITARS AND STONED LOOKING
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIANS WITH LONG
HAIR. THE BANDS HAD NAMES LIKE
"CHEYENNE", "ADT", "GRANT AND THE HEART
BEATS" AND "SWITCH". I HAD A FALLING OUT
OVER MONEY WITH THE GUITARIST OF THE
LAST BAND. AS I QUIT HE GAVE ME THESE
WORDS OF ADVICE. "DRUMERS ARE LIKE
ASSHOLES, EVERYBODY HAS ONE". THE NEXT
BAND I JOINED, I WAS THE KEYBOARD PLAYER.

IT WAS DURING THIS TIME THAT I FOUND A
JOB AT "MELODY LANE", A RECORD STORE
NEAR MY HOME. A GUY POPPED IN TO THE
RECORD STORE ONE DAY. HIS NAME WAS BOB
MOULD. HE WAS FROM UPSTATE NEW YORK
AND WENT TO SCHOOL DOWN THE STREET.
BOB WAS WEARING A LEATHER MOTORCYCLE
			 JACKET. SO WAS I
WE TALKED ABOUT MUSIC AND SPENT MANY
JOYOUS HOURS LISTENING TO EACH OTHER's
			 RECORDS. BOB WOULD PLAY ALONG
SOMETIMES ON HIS FLYING V GUITAR THAT
			 WOULD LATER BECOME HIS TRADEMARK.

MY BOSS, CHARLIE PINE WAS INVOLVED WITH
A GROUP THAT BROKE UP LEAVING A RATHER
			 LUCRATIVE ENGAGEMENT OPEN AT "RON'S
RANDOLPH INN" IN ST PAUL. CHARLIE HAD THE
NOTION THAT WE SHOULD GET A BAND
TOGETHER AND MAKE SOME GOOD DOUGH. I
			 IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF BOB. WE
PRACTICED FOR TWO WEEKS, PLYED THE
SHOW, AND CLAIMED OUR $275.00 REWARD.
BOB, GREG AND I CONTINUED TO REHERSE.
SOON WE HAD TWO ORIGINAL SONGS.
MEANWHILE BACK AT THE RECORD STORE,
CHARLIE HAD LINED UP A SHOW FOR US AT
MALCHESTER COLLEGE. THE THREE OF US
MINUS CHARLIE PLAYED OUR TWO NEW SONGS
			 AND HUSKER DU WAS BORN.

I COULD FILL VOLUMES IF I WERE TO GO ON
INTO ANY SORT OF DETAIL ABOUT THE DECADE
LONF EXISTANCE OF THE BAND. I
			 EXPERIENCED THE WIDEST VARITY OF
UNREALITIES THAT A 17 YEAR OLD COULD
			 HAVE THOUGHT POSSIBLE.

AT AGE 26 I QUIT THE BAND, DECEMBER 17
1987 TO BE EXACT. IN THE YEARS BETWEEN
THE CONCEPTION OF THE BAND AND IT'S
DEMISES, I HAD AQUIRED A SOLID MUSICAL
REPUTATION, A TWO YEAR OLD SON, AND A
			 RESPECTABLE HEROIN ADDICTION. WELL, TWO
			 OUT OF THREE AIN'T BAD

Tacks. The Maykings, from Edmonton, do a pretty
straight cover of "Keep Hanging On," with countryish
inflections. Calgary artist Matheson's cover of
"2541" is a little more off-center, and downright
			gorgeous.

Notes: Richmond Fontaine isn't a person but an alt-country
band from Portland OR in the Uncle Tupelo tradition
(but with more members and instruments). The Hüsker
cover is pretty straightforward, delivered with
minimal twang. Grant gets songwriting credit. The

Time: 51:30
Notes: The brainchild of a character named Olifr M. Guz,
who wrote all the songs except the three covers.
The album was remastered and reissued in 2005.
The style is a litte tricky to classify, sort of
minimalist surf-goth-punk with a retro feel. The
			funereally-delivered Hüsker song is (deliberately?)
mistitled, and it's not clear (mainly because I
can't quite parse the German liner notes) if it was
included on the original LP release.

Time: 61:44
Notes: The "tribute" song isn't directly about Hüsker Dü
although it includes references to the band and to
"Pink Turns To Blue." Here's an attempt at the
			lyrics:

Each room was carpeted pink or blue
Small velvet chairs of pink or blue
			  Everything backlit by black light
People sitting on the floors in pairs
The soft, fuzzy carpet creeping up their backs
All I could think is Hüsker Dü
			  Pink turns to blue ooo-oo-oooh
Telling everyone about your scars in you (???)
			  Telling everyone about your scars

The party was in ____ and it was trashed all over
Something like a tornado scene with alcohol
I think I was sitting in in the garage
			  There were no walls
			  Just some stairs going nowhere
			  Pink turns to blue ooo-oo-oooh
Telling everyone about your scars in you (???)
			  Telling everyone about your scars

All I could think is Hüsker Dü
			  Pink turns to blue ooo-oo-oooh
Telling everyone about your scars in you (???)
Telling everyone about your scars in you (???)
                     	  Yeah....
Telling everyone about your scars in you (???)

So, this is an indie-rock band from Asheville.
They describe themselves as a cross between Foo
Fighters and Hüsker Dü, but I hear more Minutemen
			than Hüsker in their style.

Notes: Solo album (one of a pair, released simultaneously)
by Canadian alt-country artist Mark Davis, also a
key figure in the considerably more energetic
Edmonton band Old Reliable. This album is pretty,
uh, laid-back. Davis's style sounds a little like

trombone on "She Floated Away" is an interesting
idea that can't quite lift the song from the

Each song is a form of tribute to a pair of related
artists (or fictional characters). Stylistic nods

is not obvious; it's a noodly tune with a bit of

Notes: Buried in the last track, a nearly 26-minute string
of demos and outtakes titled "Visitor's Band" (like
the album), is a cover of Hüsker Dü's "Perfect
Example." It begins at the 20:35 mark of the track
and runs a little under 3 minutes. The acoustic
rendition is remarkably good, raising the question
of why neither the Hüskers nor Bob Mould (who wrote
it) ever performed the song live. The rest of the
material on the album is decent enough acoustic
singer/songwriter fare, but the Hüsker cover — which
is neither listed nore credited — is the standout.

Catalog Number: MRCD 6539 [Canada]
Date Recorded: Jan-Mar 2012
Release Date: 03 Apr 2012
Time: 40:27
Notes: This seems to a mostly solo project by Nova Scotia
singer-songwriter Joel Plaskett, although he does
credit a couple of other musicians on two tracks.
It's poppy, personal, folk-tinged stuff, not bad at
all. There are several Hüsker Dü references in the
song titled "You're Mine" (lyrics below):

Let's make a racket for the old and young
For the desperate souls and the lucky ones
If we get lonely, if we get lost
Let's rattle on until the wheels come off

			 Stumbling, fumbling, singing our songs
Making them up as we're going along
Passing the guitar, passing the wine
			 Traveling time

We gotta choose the weapon for the town we take
Singing "Celebrated Summer" for the Quarry Lake
Magic's only magic 'til you know the tricks
But if this ain't real, I don't know what is

Shaking it, faking, never learning my lines
Making 'em up for the nickels and dimes
Passing the guitar, passing the wine

Every young band wants to build The Wall
But a real rock record's like a wrecking ball
If anybody asks me why I came back here
I'll say, "I'm picking up the pieces of a broken year"

			 Wondering, wandering, training my thoughts
			 Following, swallowing, connecting the dots
Passing the guitar, passing the wine... lots

The skies will turn from pink to blue,
the years will turn to sand
The needles drop on Hüsker Dü,
			   they were my favorite band
I'm traveling through space and time
			   to keep my love alive
			 It's 1995
I am yours and you are mine

Catalog Number: TND568 [Canada]
Date Recorded: Aug-Sep 2012
Release Date: 13 Nov 2012
Time: 46:01
Notes: The strong Pogues influence is to be expected, given
the band name, but the arrangements are a bit more
guitar-driven, rollicking indie-rock. The songs are
strong and very well executed. Blatant nod to "Fairy
Tale Of New York" on "Merry Christmas Baby." The
Hüsker cover is OK, but the Irish shtick works
better for these guys. Great overlooked album.

Title: Land Speed Redux

Label: Valentine Records
Catalog Number: Valentine 107 [UK]
Date Recorded: Jul 2016
Release Date: 02 Sep 2016
Time: 25:34
Notes: Free download via Bandcamp. Manchester band covers
all of Land Speed Record as dance/electronica
music. "I'm Not Interested" works pretty well in
this genre, and the lounge-y rendition of "MTC" is
sort of catchy. "Bricklayer" starts out as a
straightforward cover, but quickly slides into a
wall of electronic thrash. "Data Control" is played
straight, with decent results. The three-year-old
son of one of the band members contributes vocals on
two of the tracks, as described below in this blurb
			from the record company:

For some reason, Lucifer X decided (across three
weekends in July 2016) to record a track-by-track
version of the entire album in as many different
styles as he could manage, with the help of only
some strong coffee and his three year old son
Jamie, who contributed guest vocals and percussion
to 'Strange Week' and 'Do The Bee' - before heading
off to watch Power Rangers in the next room.

Note that this is not the same Lucifer X as the
			death metal band from India.

Notes: All Grant Hart covers on this heartfelt tribute,
which is remarkably well done, considering the speed
with which it was produced. Dani Llamas is a Spanish
musician from Andalusia who toured with Grant in
2011. He describes the project on his Bandcamp page:

I consider Grant Hart as one of the most
influential songwriters of all time. He was also my
			 friend.

I had the idea of making this tribute album since
the day he was gone in 2017.

So, I called some friends during the quarantine of
2020 and finally made this happen.

Everyone recorded at home during one week, from
			 April 3rd to April 10th, 2020.

In loving memory of my friend Grant Hart.

Title: Jupiter
Format: 12" album/digital download
Label: Thrill Jockey (via Bandcamp)
Catalog Number: THRILL 591
Date Recorded: Unknown
Release Date: 21 Jul 2023
Time: 33:20
Notes: Limited-edition (run size unknown) yellow vinyl
pressing. Solid album of indie rock tunes with lots
of fuzzed-out guitar and occasional saxophone. The
latter instrument is particularly effective on the
"Books About UFOs" cover, which is grungier and
less sprightly than the original Huskers' version.

From the descriptive blurb on Bandcamp:

On Jupiter, Brooklyn trio Upper Wilds voyage deeper
into the cosmos, mapping out the overwhelming
enormity of the universe in soaring hooks and
blistering noise. The third installment in the
trio’s exploration of our solar system looks to its
largest planet for a daring exploration of scale
and perspective. New York underground mainstay
Dan Friel’s melodic gifts and wry lyricism are
magnified and propelled ever outwards by the
thundering rhythm section of bassist Jason Binnick
and drummer Jeff Ottenbacher, all immersed in
rippling fuzz. Just like its namesake, Jupiter
stands as Upper Wilds most colossal offering in
their catalog. The raw power of their music is
amplified to titanic proportions, sky-clawing riffs
invoking the sheer awe that the heavens inspire.

Throughout Jupiter, Friel makes canny use of
shifting perspectives to make sense of the
universe’s infinite expanse and our place within
it. The buzz-saw groove of "Drifters" mirrors the
relentless forward-motion of the NASA Voyager space
probes pushing out to the edges of the known
universe, Friel musing on the likelihood that they
outlast the existence of the earth and our sun.
"Short Centuries" pays homage to the oldest married
couple on Earth, Julio Mora and Waldramina
Quinteros, and love’s ability to echo out through
			 the eons... more
