Venue notes: Folk City, NYC

Legendary folk venue in the West Village. Opened by owner Mike Porco as a coffeehouse in 1952 at 71 W 4th St, at which location it was known as "Gerde's" Folk City, after the restaurant that had previously occupied the space. Moved circa 1970 to 130 W 3rd St (where the Hüskers played) and lost the "Gerde's" part of the name. Closed circa 1987. The 3rd St site subsequently became one of several homes to the Kettle of Fish, itself a 60s legend when it was located above the Gaslight at 116 MacDougal. The Kettle of Fish relocated to Christopher St in 1999, and the 3rd St space was subsequently occupied by the Fat Black Pussycat (itself relocated from its original spot on Minetta St — confused yet?).
